Another big shocker for most people is finding out that their dental insurance plan won't pay for the costs of orthodontics care. You see, orthodontics (in most cases) is a completely separate policy that must be purchased and, unfortunately, it has big time limitations. Most of these policies will only pay for up to 50% of the costs of braces. You have to pay the rest. Also, another shocker is that most policies also carry a maximum limit of what they'll pay for. This may be as low as a $1,000 annual coverage limit for an individual dental plan.
So what do you do if you or someone else in your family needs braces right away? Well, there aren't many free options, however, there are a few things you can look into that may help.
#1. Discount Dental Plans
Discount plans offer a reduced fee on routine dental care. You'll receive discounts by joining a network of dentists that have agreed to accept the plan in exchange for being paid the reduced fee in full at the time of the appointment. An example could be something like this. The usual cost of braces might be $3,000. By joining a discount plan you may save as much as 60%, depending on the plan you choose and what is available in your area.
The two major drawbacks to these types of plans is that you still have to have a chunk of money at the time the work is performed and also, you're restricted to only seeing dentists and specialists that are part of the plan's network of providers. This means that you may not be able to see your regular dentist, but if it meant saving that much money you may want to consider it.
#2. Dental & Orthodontic Insurance
The plan here is to buy a policy BEFORE you have any problems. These plans will NOT pay for any condition that they consider to be pre-existing. That means that if you need the work done now then it's already too late. Buy the plans before you need them and then you'll be able to get a certain amount of help.
#3. State Assistance
This depends on the state where you live, but some states will provide assistance for dental care, depending on your income and if you qualify, although there have been many cutbacks in recent years.
Your best bet is to take action. If you or you child needs braces then sitting on the couch and worrying about it won't change the situation. You might find a dentist that will finance you if you have money to put down, but you won't know until you take action.
